Born in Brussels in 1929, the third and last child of a highborn American banker and his delicate, beautiful wife, she was born privileged and taught that privilege incurs responsibilities. She lived out her early years untouched by life and death during the ominous 1930s, until the ominous became the real and the family fled to America. Inheriting her father's love of paintings and museums and her mother's love of costumes and clothing, Liz early on discovered "the beauty of everyday things," and at the age of twenty won the Grand Award in the Harper's Junior Bazaar Design Contest, which earned her a trip to Paris to work for ten days with famed couturier Jacques Heim. For the next twenty-five years she worked as a designer and sketch artist before starting her own company with her husband Art Ortenberg. Liz Claiborne, Inc. was an immediate success, and was by 1981 a Fortune 500 company with $1.2 billion in sales.

In this book Art Ortenberg does not so much celebrate Liz Claiborne the designer and entrepreneur, but rather Liz the woman. "Liz left us more than her work," he concludes, "perhaps more than the consequences of her work; she left us herself. The making of that self, and the good she did for others, is the story I tell."

While the first half of Ortenberg's paean makes an able account of the duo's workaday life, the second half is dominated by Claiborne's slow, painful struggle with ovarian cancer, an exhaustive (and exhausting) account of horrors suffered that could discourage all but the most committed readers. Liz Claiborne...a woman with a great smile

Anyone and everyone in the fashion industry is familiar with Liz Claiborne fashion. Though are you familiar with the woman who created this successful fashion empire? Unless you were one of the few lucky ones who got to work with Liz then you don't really know who Liz is and was.

Liz Claiborne grew up always knowing exactly what she wanted to be...a fashion designer. She had a great fashion sense. In 1976, Liz started Liz Claiborne Inc. Sadly on June 26, 2007, Liz passed way from cancer. Even up to the very end, Liz was still smiling and a fighter.

In Liz Claiborne, the Legend, the Woman, author, business partner and Liz's husband, Art Ortenberg shares with readers just who Liz really was...a nice person, wife and entrepreneur with great smile and warm heart.

This book truly was a celebration of a Liz Claiborne. She was loved by many people The pictures inserted through out this book were a nice bonus. If you are looking to read this book expecting a memoir of Liz Claiborne and how she started out in the business and maybe learn a couple of interesting facts, then this may not be the book for you. Though, if you are wanting to treasure a moment or two about Liz the woman, then you should check this book out. This would make a good collector's item or make a nice gift to that fashionable person in your life.

The book rambles a lot,and is obviously written in grief. i was surprised to see that they met while married to others and seemed proud of it.
its really too long and very personal. But i am sorry for the writer.

Start with her later, meatier books

Since I started with her later books, the Blood Sorcery Bibles I & II and 26 Daemons, this earlier book felt like a scattered rehashing of her more cohesive later material. It is just a collection of quotes, however some of them are quite informative, funny, or clever. I'd start with the BSBs and then 26 Daemons and get this one if you want more Cagliastro after that.

Well done quote books are hard to come by

I got this book just after reading another one of Cagliastro's books. It is the kind of thing to read a little at a time, opening your mind and presenting a point of view you may not have previously thought of.

I would buy it again as a gift if someone needed to shine a new light on their lives.

Someone who has dealings with demons had better have a strong will, personality and sense of self. Accordingly Madame Cagliastro does not disappoint. An excellent primer on the mindset one must bring to working FOR EFFECT in magical realms where surrender is not an option and prisoners are not taken.

Sharon Robinson has been associated with Leonard Cohen since touring with him as a singer in 1979-80. She co-wrote and produced Cohen's 2001 album, Ten New Songs, (one of Rolling Stone's "Top 100 Albums of the Decade"), and co-authored the Cohen classics, "Everybody Knows" and "Waiting for the Miracle." A Grammy winning songwriter, Robinson's work has been covered by artists as diverse as Patti LaBelle, Don Henley, Aaron Neville, and Roberta Flack to name a few. Robinson's solo album, Everybody Knows (2008), garnered wide critical acclaim, as have her recent performances on the Cohen World Tour. Sharon once worked as the staff photographer at the world-famous Coconut Grove nightclub in Los Angeles. Sharon is currently working on a new album that will be released in early 2015.

Larry “Ratso” Sloman is one of America’s great counter culture writers and contemporary biographers.  Bob Dylan referred to Sloman’s account of the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue, On the Road with Bob Dylan, as, ‘…the War and Peace of Rock and Roll.’  He has been a friend of Leonard Cohen's for 40 years.

Wish I could return it.

Now I am a big fan of Leonard Cohen and Sharon Robinson, but I feel sadly ripped off by the truly poor quality of photos in this book. Maybe some will see them as artsy in a way, but I don't think so. Based on Ms. Robinson's comments in the front of the book, it sounds as if she took the photos with her iPhone, and it shows. Many shots are dark, out of focus, and don't really evoke much of anything about their touring. Also, all the captions are in the back of the book, so you don't know what you're seeing most of the time unless you continually flip. I don't mind seeing someone's amateur trip photos, but for the price, not so much.

Great photos. Perfect set of pictures to have on my cofee ottemon. It's fun to look at all his different moods! Leonard Cohen
Is my hero! This is really a good present, but we are keeping it. Sometimes it is just fun to look at the pictures and think about what an interesting life Leonard has had while living for his passion. Music is an amazing gift. Song writing is a gift. Now, he writes books that we love. It was natural that photography would be included. We have many little books that we love about him or that he wrote. This one has amazing pictures.

Don't want to just look at the pictures

I expected more than just pictures. I was looking forward to an insightful narrative on touring with Cohen from someone who has been close to him for such an extensive period of time . In saying this I do not want to distract from the quality of the photographs. I really enjoyed the eclectic collection.

Disappointing to find the presentation of this hardcover at this price not up to scratch. Within a couple of days the photograph glued to the front cover began to lift. Poor production for a book at this price don't you think ?
