Basic Stuff with lots of self-promotion

I thumbed through this book quite quickly (I didn't buy it but a friend has it), so I'm hoping I may just have been unlucky and missed every single good part of the book. But if so, that in itself is quite telling.

Nothing really stood out as being innovative, just the same stuff as in every other MLM book but said differently. On top of that, lots of self-promotion is going on... Just use the "look inside" feature of Amazon to see what I'm talking about.

I am NOT saying that the proposed strategies won't work; I think they will. But I am saying that I did not see anything obviously "new", "innovative", or "earth shattering" in the content. Could it be good as a collated source for basic "MLM 101:Internet" info? Yes. Could you find most of this for free online, or through your own intuition? Probably.

From what I have seen, this book's aim is not actually to make you successful at MLM; it is to convince you that the author is "an MLM Powerhouse" and to drive you to go to his website so you can join up under him and bring him money that way. Look at the progression of chapter titles to see what I mean... The book pretty much goes: His "OMG I'm so successful" story > Content > what to do now > Oh by the way look at this special offer and great pre-launch opportunity that I just happen to casually mention...

All this seemed to confirm my initial suspicion:
I looked up this book because I saw a press release the author just distributed about a project I am involved in. I wanted to look this guy up because I am a friend of a co-founder of the company, and the numbers he quotes in his press release are completely out of whack, and blatant lies (unless my friend has been lying to me, and the online video updates by the CEO of said company are also lies... ). Add to that his claim of being a "#1 bestselling author" when his ONLY book, released 6 months ago (so he is a "new" author it seems) is ranked #74 of a sub sub sub sub sub category and 200 000th overall on Amazon... and you quickly get the picture; I'm not sure I'd want to get involved with him. So, how credible are the reviews of his book, or the author himself? I don't know him, maybe he just "made a mistake" on his self-promoting profile and press release...

I may be wrong don't take my word for it, do your own research!

No real meat

Realizing that the internet can play a big role in networking with people I was looking for some concrete steps and examples of how to utilize the internet to build a thriving MLM group, especially in the prelaunch stage. This book could have, based on the author, been full of specifics. Instead, it was full of vague ideas without concrete examples and no real specific plans for how to actually utilize social marketing to build your prelaunch network.

I bought the book in particular for the section on social marketing utilizing Facebook etc. Apparently, the author was working on a prelaunch as he wrote this book and talked about a plan he had in place utilizing social networking that he had for his team but he gave no specifics on actually how to do it. Just said if you joined his team, you would have access.

The book is great if you want motivational thoughts and how to keep yourself pumped up. Those portions of the book were good but that wasn't the purpose of the book. The big idea of the book was how to execute a massive prelaunch campaign. Sadly, this book lacked the specifics to help someone do that.

One bonus he did provide was a website where you could download a second version of the book to give to people that was stripped of any identifying information about the author so you could use it as a tool to build a team. This was a nice gesture. That book can be helpful to people with no background of mlm or who need some inspiration and motivation.

Le Fanu (a medical columnist for London's Daily and Sunday Telegraph) contemplates what he sees as the unhappy situation of contemporary health care. The decades from the 1940s to the 1980s saw some of the most critically important advances Western medicine has seen, from penicillin to the heart pump that made open-heart surgery possible. Yet doctors are disillusioned, and patients are turning in droves to alternative forms of medicine. How has this dilemma come about? Le Fanu first details the astonishing breakthroughs of the earlier part of the 20th century (he describes, for instance, the progress made by the first patient ever administered penicillin). But, more controversially, he argues that since the 1980s medical progress has been crippled by two developments, which he terms "Social Theory" and "New Genetics," respectively: according to the author, misguided epidemiologists promote a lifestyle changes (low-cholesterol diet, etc.) as a means of preventing heart disease; and geneticists have misled us into thinking that their research breakthroughs can eliminate genetic diseases. Both cases have been overstated, Le Fanu contends, drawing on a wealth of scientific data to attempt to show that dietary changes have done little to prevent heart disease and that genetic experiments, despite "millions of hours of research," have had "scarcely detectable" practical results. English physician and Daily Telegraph columnist Le Fanu writes a thoughtful history of the only 20th-century revolution that turned out brilliantly.During the century before 1940, people grew healthier and lived longer through improved hygiene, housing, and nutrition. Once they got sick, however, doctors weren't that much help: except for a few treatments (such as thyroid hormone, insulin, and vitamins) a patient got better pretty much on his own--or he didn't. WWII marked the beginning of a torrent of miraculous advances. To label these miracles is no hype. Dreadfully sick people received penicillin, cortisone, or lithium--and suddenly they weren't sick. Every single child who contracted leukemia in 1950 died; today almost all live. Victims of congenital heart disease or kidney failure lived as pitiful invalids if they lived at all; now they live normally. This was a wonderful period full of heroes, and Le Fanu describes it superbly in the first half of his story. Then he grows sober, thoughtful, and pessimistic. Medicine's golden age peaked in the 1960s, he writes. Important discoveries trailed off after 1970, introduction of genuinely new drugs dropped sharply, and two disturbing trends appeared. He calls one the Social Theory. Misled by triumphs of the golden age (proof that smoking causes cancer and treating hypertension prevents strokes), doctors embraced a utopian theory of prevention with enthusiasm unaccompanied by proof. Readers will be jolted by the author's claim that diet, lifestyle, and pollution contribute only marginally to ill health. Obsessive efforts to fine-tune our diet and environment (medical correctness) have, in Le Fanu's view, produced little beside anxiety. The author also takes a dim view of the New Genetics: science's fascination with DNA, genetic engineering, and genetic therapy. He points out that 20 years of expensive research, media obsession, and wildly optimistic claims have produced only minor benefits to patients. Everything you know is wrong...

Very rarely, I come across a book so enjoyable that I have to put everything else on hold until I finish reading it. This is one of those books. It combines fanscinating information, intriguing analysis, and a thoroughly enjoyable writing style.
The book is divided into two major sections: an extended prologue, and the book proper. The prologue is nearly half of the book, and it describes twelve definitive moments in medicine in the past 50 years. This section is informative and enjoyable, and the book is worth reading for this part alone.
The second section is even better. Le Fanu believes that medicine experienced its Golden Age during the fifties and sixties, and is now in decline. He provides compelling evidence in support of this claim, and his discussions on the false hopes brought about by genetics, and the falsity of the Social Theory (the theory that most of our health problems are caused by environmental factors) are great, and probably largely correct.
This is a book that I would recommend to anyone. It is easy enough for the layman to understand, and I think that those in the medical profession will get a lot out of it, whether they agree with the author or not. READ THIS BOOK!!!

Good antidote to thoughtless faith in medicine

Le Fanu writes extremely well, as long as he's not ranting. His coverage of the history of western medicine is informative and highly readable, if debatable on small points. His talent is creating a real story out of a collection of facts, and delivering it in a punchy and amusing way.

Le Fanu successfully communicates his main thesis - that the history of medical progress consists mainly of accidental or fortuitous discoveries, and that it is therefore not the rational machine that many people imagine it to be. We know much less about human health than you might think, and even less about how to go about improving it. Since many otherwise intelligent and well-informed people place blind faith in doctors, medicine, and in press stories about health issues, Le Fanu is performing an important public service.

The book is marred by his rants against modern medical research. While this industry undoubtedly deserves criticism, he makes a poor job of it. He ceases to support the points he makes, and since many of them are debatable, it is difficult to take this part of the book seriously. For example, he suggests shutting down all departments of epidemiology in all medical educational and research institutions. While I hold no torch for epidemiology, this strikes me as excessive, and he fails to win me over with any rational explanation as to how this would help.

Despite my reservations about the final chapters, I would highly recommend this book. Anyone who already harbours doubts or concerns about western medicine will find the book interesting. Anyone who does not really needs to read this.

Provocative and infuriating survey

The Telegraph's medical columnist claims that medicine's golden age was from 1945 to 1980, due to the chance discovery of drugs, advances in clinical science and innovative technology. He believes that it is now exhausted, and laments that the vacuum is being filled by what he thinks are the dead ends of New Genetics, epidemiology and social medicine. It is untimely to write off genetics when the Human Genome Project offers such exciting possibilities.
He calls for more research into the causes of disease, and rightly rejects idealist explanations. Doctors used to think that peptic ulcers were due to `stress' or `personality', but in 1984, Barry Marshall, a young Australian doctor, identified a type of bacterium that triggered them. A seven-day course of antibiotics was the cure. The same organism caused two-thirds of stomach cancer cases. In 1986, Thomas Grayston discovered that the bacterium chlamydia caused heart disease. Perhaps as yet undiscovered bacteria cause arthritis, schizophrenia, leukaemia, MS, diabetes and ME.
He has a brilliant chapter on how the use of new drugs refuted Freudianism, as chlorpromazine effectively relieved schizophrenia's symptoms, lithium mania's, prozac depression's and valium anxiety's.
Le Fanu shows that the influential historian of medicine Thomas McKeown wrongly denied doctors the credit for tuberculosis's decline. Doctors' seclusion of TB patients in sanatoria dramatically reduced the infection's incidence.
He argues against social medicine, rejecting all social and economic explanations of illness. But lifestyle changes - losing weight, improving diet and exercising more - do prevent diabetes and promote health and well-being (British Medical Journal, 14 July 2001, page 63.)
He claims that medicine has run its course. We have seen the misanthropic idea of the end of history, of politics, of industry and of class. Now Le Fanu pronounces the end of medicine. This is a provocative and infuriating book, full of ideas and prejudices. We need the tests of practice to see what he has got right.

Profound and important.

For starters, Sereny is an excellent writer. She takes the story of a child murdering a child and delicately peels away the layers of neglect that brought a young girl so far. We in the US have seen way too many young killers splash across the news. Here is at long last a book that shows us how these erruptons occur.This really ought to be a must read for any person involved in juvinile justice, education, theraphy, and any other discipline that places adults near troubled children. All of us can learn something here that will make us better family members, friends and relatives of children in crisis.

Disjointed but worth the read

I had a difficult time starting this book. It was a real slow go. But, when the author finally got into the story of Mary Bell, it is fascinating. I found Mary Bell to be all together a very unlikable person. During her incarceration, she was at times the criminal from hell. She, at all times, had no moral character. By ending the book the way Sereny does, she is trying to get us to understand why Mary was the way she was. I agree that the justice system does not know what to do with these kids. Yes, if Mary had been given psychological as well as life coping skills and had been cared for more with a loving hand than a hard one, she might have learned earlier in her life about "right and wrong". But, this in know way would excuse her for her crime or the manner of life she choose while in jail. In light of the school shootings we've had here in the states, one might think this book would shed some light. But, as with the case of Harris and Kleibold, there is no evidence of phsical or sexual child abuse. So, what of them?

Very brief, and a shade more content than the web tutorial

While there is some good content in this book, it is extremely brief. To make matters worse, majority of the content is the same as the first 5/6 steps of the tutorial on the rabbitmq website. There are a handful of good points, but I would have preferred more detail as to why certain recommendations were made and how better to utilize rabbitmq (as opposed to a list of queue types and tutorial implementations). I am still in shock how short this book was.

If you want a brief overview and a brief narrative of the first 5 examples on the rabbitmq website, then this book might be for you. However, in my opinion there is not nearly enough content in this book to warrant the $10 I spent. Knowing what I know about this book now, I'd have a hard time paying more than $2-3.

A good read with easy to follow example code

I was sent a copy of this book for review, and I'm glad I was. I like this book. I didn't know anything about RabbitMQ before picking the book up and little about Node.js which is used for all the example code. I was keen to learn about RabbitMQ though, knowing that it's used in my favourite IaaS platform: OpenStack.

I think that the sub-title of the book "Build scalable message-based applications with RabbitMQ" should mention that this is "with RabbitMQ and Node.js".

This is a short book, part of PacktPubs "INSTANT" series, "Short Fast Focused" as they say on the book. It's about 40 pages long.

I like this book because without any knowledge either of RabbitMQ or Node.js I found the examples to be easy to follow and the code easy to read. All the example code is available from PacktPub's web site - if you've registered the book - or from github.

The first section describes the explains why RabbitMQ exists abstracting away the problems of scalability, reponsiveness, availability etc allowing you to get on with your application able to take the low-level messaging for granted followed by how to install RabbitMQ and the amqp module needed for Node.js.

The body of the book is a series of exercises starting with a simple "Hello World" exchange between a Producer and a Consumer, gradually becoming more complicated with examples of Work Queues, Persistent Messages, Acknowledgements, Publisher Confirms, Publish Subscrube and Complex Routing. These examples are incremental developments all part of an online store application.
The incremental nature really helps to follow the examples.

The complex routing example explains how to decouple the application further routing different types of messages to multiple queues.

The final section "Go Forth and Multiply" (rabbits again!) talks about more advanced issues which are not covered in detail here, but links are provided to relevant information on Clustering and Mirroring, Error handling and Recovery, AMQP connections (being resource limited), Heartbeats, Reconnects etc. These are real world issues for serious deployments that are acknowledged if not treated in detail.

This section finishes with a list of useful Architecture and Performance hints.

Overall this is a very good book for an introduction to RabbtiMQ. Although Node.js is used throughout all that's needed is a simple understanding of java scripts and javascripts manner of handling functions. A nice concise read presenting the concepts in an easy incremental manner with good working example code.

Brief and to the point

I was invited by Packt Publishing to read and review the book, as a part of their instant series.

As in other installments, the idea is to start with the simplest scenarios quickly covering intermediate and advanced scenarios at the end of the book. I personally think the book complements the tutorials on offer on the rabbitMQ site, going a bit beyond than the ground covered by these, and with the twist of using javascript (node.js) for everything, as opposed to the python and java tutorials in the official web site.

The book starts the same way as the tutorials, with the Hello World and Work Queues chapters, but then goes on to expand and demonstrate, persistent messages, acks, patterns such as publisher confirms and publish / subscribe, the finishing off with a routing example and some quick performance tips. Not bad considering that real content pagecount is around 40 pages.

If you've never worked with rabbitMQ or used to work only with old MQ products of yore of IBM and the likes, this is a good introduction. Obviously the page count means you cannot expect to have any deep dive on any topic, but then that's clear in the title. I think the book does it job of getting you started on the most common patternsa and how to get them running. Then you need, of course, to evolve them to fit your specific scenarios.
