Using coloured pencils, both hard and water-soluble varieties, Trudy shows you how to use them to best effect, with clear examples of techniques, step-by-step stages to follow and plenty of Trudy's annotated drawings. There's useful information on creating textures, using masking fluid, and working from photographs. Readers of Leisure Painter will be familiar with Trudy's teaching style and her beautiful drawings will win over those yet to be introduced to her work.-Leisure Painter Search Press have been packing a lot into their art instruction books lately, and this is no exception. It follows the pattern of Trudy's previous books in having break-out details of completed paintings, but there are also some longer demonstrations as well as hints and tips. The overall impression is of a busy and fact-packed book, and this is borne out in practice. Trudy begins with a useful survey of the various materials available today (and it's become so diverse that this is rather more than the basic overview), from simple coloured pencils to those from Coloursoft and Academy and on to Iktense and Aquatone, before looking at pastels, papers and the various watercolour options. About the Author
Trudy Friend is teacher trained - attaining her degree at Brighton College of Art. She taught up to 'A' level GCE in secondary and technical high school before teaching adults. Great book with only one drawback

Great book, with excellent examples and lots of techniques to learn and apply. The author is obviously quite versed in the art of drawing and painting with colored pencils.

The only drawback this book has is that the author only talks about Derwent products. My assumption is that she either got sponsored by this particular company, or she has't tried to use other colored pencil brands. There is nothing wrong with Derwent products, but there are other brands out there, like Faber-Castell or Caran d'Ache, that I like using better because of how they feel when I apply them to paper.

An inspiring, beautiful book, written by an inspiring artist--one of my favorites. My students love this book and wanted to borrow it before I had a chance to read it. I can recommend this book to beginning artists as well as advanced. There is something to learn and use no matter one's level.

Good Reading Practice for an Inexperienced Spanish Student

I thought the Spanish text in this book was well-selected and it was very useful for gaining experience reading a new language. I found that it worked pretty well when linked to the Merriam-Webster Spanish-English Translation Dictionary which I also bought and set as the primary dictionary. For the price I thought it was a good buy. Here are a few criticisms:
1. The book contains 6524 locations but only the first 1344 of them (20% of the book) are devoted to Spanish text. The next 2% of the book is devoted to Spanish verse (The Fables of Iriarte) and the final 78% of the book is devoted to the Spanish-English dictionary that contains the vocabulary with its English translation. Unfortunately that 78% of the book is really not useful in the Kindle edition because it would be impractical to use it for looking up words while reading.
2. The Merriam-Webster dictionary worked pretty well except that it was not able to find any word that was run together with another word, and this practice is very common in Spanish text.
3. Finally, most of the text consisted of storybook content suitable for reading to small children. An elementary reader geared to a more mature audience (yo tengo 65 años) would be welcome.

Great to read aloud to yourself

I'm at a very basic level with Spanish right now (actually, relearning what little I learned 30 years ago in college), but I went on and bought this reader to provide myself a kind of immersion experience. I read the stories aloud to myself, first slowly and then faster, even if I don't understand what I am reading. What's interesting is how, even when I know less than 20% of the vocabulary and still am quite weak on the verbs, I still manage to guess at some of the meanings. When a particular word strikes me as interesting, I'll look it up, and I'm building vocabulary this way. In combination with the text, Fundamental Spanish, I am actually enjoying my dips into the language.

The Kindle edition is very readable, and you cannot beat the price. Go for it!

A dated but fun reader

This is an older, but fun spanish reader. I am somewhere between a beginner and an intermediate spanish speaker. By making a spanish dictionary the default Kindle dictionary, the book was relatively easy to read and quite interesting. The stories are intended for children, but are still fun for an adult to read.

About the Author
Dr Cheng-Lung (Richard) Wu is a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Aviation at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He obtained his PhD from Loughborough University, UK, in 2001. Since then Cheng-Lung has devoted much of his time to the subjects of airline operations, schedule planning/optimization, and delay/operations modeling, both through his research and also consulting for several major airlines. Cheng-Lung also publishes extensively in major air transport journals, such as the Journal of Air Transport Management and Transportation Planning and Technology, and is an editorial board member of the World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research and the International Journal of Aviation Management.

Paul B. Wignall is professor of palaeoenvironments at the University of Leeds. He has been investigating mass extinctions for more than twenty-five years, a scientific quest that has taken him to dozens of countries around the world. The coauthor of Mass Extinctions and Their Aftermath, he lives in Leeds.

Fascinating story of the near wipe-out of life on Earth

Looked at broadly, there have been five major extinction events in the history of life on Earth, with long stretches of relative stability between, in which evolution filled the emptied niches. The most devastating event, which destroyed almost all life on the planet occurred at the end of the Permian period, some 252 million years ago. The previous major extinction, which concluded the Devonian, had taken place more than 100 million years earlier, while the next ended the Triassic, fifty million years later. After that, life flourished for a further 135 million years, until the gigantic Chicxulub meteorite set off the train of events that led to the disappearance of the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.

In detail, however, the picture becomes much more complex. Recent research, much of it carried out during the past decade, reveals that over a period of 80 million years, spanning the latter part of the Permian and the whole of the Triassic, the earth suffered no fewer than six extinctions. The question this fascinating book sets out to answer is, What combinations of conditions caused this devastating series over such a relatively short geological time span?

The common factor in these extinctions appears to be volcanic activity on a vast scale, which continued for long periods, flooding the earth with enormous volumes of basalt. The probable effects of these on the atmospheric and ocean chemistries, and hence on living creatures, are discussed comprehensively, but in language that is minimally technical and very accessible.

Another question asks why several earlier and later volcanic eruptions of equal magnitude had very little effect on life, and did not lead to extinctions. The overall conclusion, for which the author argues persuasively, is that the Permian-Triassic devastations occurred because the dry land on Earth during that time was concentrated into a single mass, Pangea, which later broke up into the continents we know today.

This is an intriguing, even exciting story that is very well told, and more of it is likely to emerge with further discoveries over the coming years. Readers interested in the natural history and geology of our living planet will love this book, and will learn a great deal from it that is new.

Life on collision course with forces of nature

About 251 million years ago, life on planet earth was almost extinct. Most species were lost in a catastrophic event along with the loss of habitats for of most land and marine creatures. It took almost 100 million years for life to return to pre-existing level, and the biodiversity returned in the form of diverse marine creatures, insects, dinosaurs, mammals and plants. In this process, animals and plants took various shapes, sizes and habitats. In this book, University of Leeds professor, Paul Wignall examines the environment of Pangea when the planet was fused into one single super continent. Atmospheric and geological conditions were vastly different with few coastline habitats, limited rainfall, and the deeper part of the land uninhabitable. Huge volcanic eruptions resulted in catastrophic events that filled the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and covered the land with lava. Changes in atmospheric temperatures, acidification of the ocean and depletion of life-supporting oxygen made the planet very hostile for life. Eventually a slow and steady separation of the single land mass into five continents changed the planet’s atmosphere and created diverse environment. Species evolved in the reformed planet with a tremendous increase in diversity.

Recent studies have suggested that the asteroid that hit Yucatan Peninsula 65 million years ago also intensified volcanic eruptions in the Deccan Plateau of India. Volcanic eruptions became twice as intense, throwing out a deadly cocktail of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. The shockwaves produced at this time shook up earth and its volcanic “plumbing systems” around the world, creating larger magma chambers that spewed out more material. This “combined effect” is now believed to be responsible for wiping out dinosaurs.

Sir Charles Lyell was the first geologist to propose, in the first half of the nineteenth century, that earth was formed after cataclysmic events on giant scale in the distant past. He observed that the earth was shaped by slow-moving forces still in operation today, but acting over for a very long period of time. This idea still holds good and it was quite bold for his time when it was believed in the idea of abrupt planetary changes that conforms to beliefs of the Book of Genesis.

While geological and paleontological studies have been helpful to understand the formation of a habitable planet such as earth, we are still a long way to account for all factors that shaped our world. This is especially critical when NASA is investigating life on exoplanets with vigor and enthusiasm. Professor Wignall’s seminal work in this area is fascinating and should encourage readers to get interested in this field and learn more about the ancient history of our planet.

Fascinating and insightful picture of plate tectonics and major extinction events of Late Mesozoic.
Clearly shows that geology is more than rocks, minerals and stratigraphy. For me it opened some interesting
analytical inferences re the relationships of tectonics and extinctions that made more clear what
happened beyond a mega-meteroic assault on our planet. Read it, then read it again!.
