Grabbed hold of me like a hand shooting out of a grave

Think you know a thing or two about zombies? I thought I did, until I read this book, which rocked my provincial little world and showed me the true history of the undead. In the introduction to The Transatlantic Zombie, Lauro argues that the zombie is perhaps our most “American” monster: It comes from elsewhere. It’s informed by slavery colonialism, and occupation. “Yet somehow,” she writes, "this always gets relegated to the backstory rather than treated as THE story.” What follows is certainly THE story — the authoritative history of the zombie myth, how it was used by Haitians against their colonial oppressors, and how it was stolen by Americans and turned into a commercialized product for the masses. Can the zombie be saved from consumer culture? Based on my reading of this book, I think the answer is a resounding maybe. But if we have a thorough understanding of the zombie’s origins, I think there’s a better chance that the living dead will live on.

A New Hope

I really did love this book and loved how the characters had grown into themselves. This book picks up right where book 1 leaves off and it flows and you do get to see the depth of the characters and how far they would go to protect each other. Karla discovers she has a Brother and she doesn't know what to think or how to feel but throughout the book her relationship with her Brother develops into a big sister little brother bond and I found myself missing my big brother. Karla finally gets adopted and has her life ahead of her. Her Brother and Sister come to live with her in the States and that makes Karla even happier.
The reasons I only gave it four stars is not because of the lack of story it was because of the few things I struggled it get through. First of I was 15-16 once and I thought my boyfriend at the time was the love of my life and wanted no one else, Karla and Conner's relationship was to intense and I feel is headed for a destruction because of the intensity of it. Second I know that sex is a huge issue with teenagers but I don't want my teenager reading a book that talks about teenagers doing it. I do love the fact that Karla can stand up for herself and can tell Conner how she feels about it, I felt the the only sensible one in this situation is Andrew because he tells Conner that he does not approve of them making that step but he is there for them if happens. The other thing is the relationship between Manuel and Callie, the age difference gets to me because she is 16 and he is 20, there is something wrong with that and I can't believe that her family and friends are okay with it. I really did enjoy this book and minus those few concerns I would recommend this book to anyone.

This book was a little better than the first. I'm glad that Karla found another brother Elliott, she finally ended up adopted and she is working on herself. She has the entire world behind her helping. Her aunt needed to be put in her place and never come to visit. She was just a hateful woman. What I didn't like about this story is Karla & Conner's "I Love You's" were too much. They are young teenagers and that statement was overdone. Callie & Manuel's relationship is too much since she's 16 and he's 20. I did enjoy this book though and am looking forward to reading book 3.

a great and clean read!

A New Hope is the second book in the Second Chance Series by Christina Escue. It will be released on March 28th. I had the privilege of reading this book very recently and I have to say, I like the story line to it and while we see the characters as more like children in the first book, you can definitely tell that they have grown up some in this book since many of them are facing challenges that have went from being accepted when they were younger to now having the challenges of deep relationships and whether to have sex or not since they are so young. This is a clean book so it does not condone teenage sex or anything and I like the outlook that the adoptive dad, Andrew, has on this issue in particular. Andrew tells his daughter's boyfriend, Connor, that he doesn't really approve of it but still wants them to be safe and that Connor can talk to him about whatever should he need to. This book has a few different stories in it though, the most prominent being the appearance of Karla, the adoptive daughter, welcoming her brother, Elliot into the family. After his grandmother dies, he comes to live with Karla and her family. It is a tough adjustment for him. He has dyslexia and has a really hard time reading. It shows his struggles in and out of school. My favorite though has to be the chemistry between Manuel and Callie. Manuel is Karla's brother and Callie is Connor's twin sister. The two of them have a kind of chemistry between them that is there from the moment Manuel shows up in the story, but he irks Callie to no end and she doesn't know what to do with her feelings. This is a good read! One definitely to check out when it is released!

Information is presented in a very intuitive manner. Ravindran presents several helpful examples to explain concepts. The book is an excellent tool for anyone working in supply chain, but by no means is it all encompassing.

Worst book I've read in recent memory.

I hated this book. I cannot be more adamant about how -much- I hated this book

To quote the legendary Dorothy Parker, 'This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.'

The two main characters, Nate and Quinn share a night of passion, after which Quinn abandons Nate for two-years with no explanation. No. Explanation. None. Ignoring all his texts, emails, and phone calls. (later admitting to 'saving' them, as if that's somehow redeeming?)

Fast-forward two years, and Quinn comes after Nate, with the sole purpose of getting back together with the man he 'loves'.

And the excuse for these two-years of emotional damage he's done to Quinn, is that he was taking care of a dying friend for two-years, and didn't want Nate to experience that with him. As if what he did, wasn't a far worse thing to do.

But after some steamy scenes, Quinn slimes his way back in, and Quinn just forgives him.

With the exception of Nate, I wanted to punch every character in the face. From the sister-in-law, who degraded Nate in the first chapter, in the name of 'concern for his well being'. To the brother Brandon who invariably takes Quinn's side.

I am jaw-clenchingly annoyed with this narrative, and cannot recommend that you -not- read it enough.

Short, Sexy and Steamy!

At just fifteen years old, Nate not only knew he was gay, he knew exactly who he wanted… his brother’s best friend Quinn. Several years later on an annual Holiday trip to their family cabin, Nate finally gets what he has wanted for so long. But he is left stunned, confused and broken hearted when he wakes up the next morning to find Quinn gone.

Two years later Quinn is back to beg for forgiveness and to finally explain to Nate why he snuck out of the bed they’d just shared, like a thief in the night. Quinn is back to lay claim to Nate, but what he finds is not the energetic, full of life young man that Quinn fell in love with. Nate is pissed off, defiant and wants nothing to do with Quinn. Will an unplanned trip to the cabin and a couple of days alone be the answer to Quinn’s prayers?

Short, Sexy and… wait for it… Steamy! Kostova has delivered yet another fantastic Holiday story full of meat for us to sink our teeth into. (pun intended) Seriously, there was a lot of content in so few pages and I was drawn into the story from the start. My heart broke for young Nate, to have the one thing he has always dreamed of, then to have it snatched away while he lay dreaming. It really hits Nate hard and just by the dialogue in the story between Quinn and Bran, Nates brother, you know how hard the years have been on both men. I knew though, I just knew there had to be a reason. I’ll say no more, you’ll have to read for yourself.

Definitely the perfect little short story for this time of year; Snowed In is intense, passionate and intriguing. I devoured it in a little over an hour, just could not put it down once I started.

I absolutely LOVED this novella by Teodora Kostova. From the second it began I was hooked. It’s broken into 2 parts. Part one is Nate and part two is Quinn. I loved how she constructed the story. Novellas are tricky to really get the span of time across because they aren’t novels. Teodora managed to master it and I was sucked into this gorgeous and sexy love story. This is a fabulous holiday treat!

Clear and intelligent intro to enzyme kinetics

This is a superb introduction to enzyme kinetics for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as anyone who has ever taken an introductory biochemistry course. If everyone who is doing enzyme kinetics these days read this book, their experimental design would be far less sloppy, and results much more reliable. It is not nearly as comprehensive as Segel's book, but its pedagogical value is great. (The only objection I had is that authors style of exposition sometimes gets a bit too acerbic. But, after all, the author is English :)

Thorough, Concise, and Convincing

The Space Gods Revealed remains an excellent, clear, and compelling refutation to the "von Daniken Phenomenon." Written in a factual and direct manner, the book starts with a short description of the scientific method, theory and evidence - and how von Daniken's ideas fall short when examined in detail.

The book looks at ancient astronauts and the Bible, von Daniken's genetic miracle speculation, the Piri Re'is Map, the Nazca Plains, Easter Island, the Egyptian Pyramids and the Palenque Astronaut. The author is not sarcastic in his demolition of von Daniken's theories, nor is he long-winded: it's all short, matter-of-fact explanations. From pointing out von Daniken's habit of offering multiple unlikely ideas as if adding them up made them more likely, or just getting dates and scientific concepts wrong or out of context.

None of the major parts of von Daniken's proof add up to much. The Piri Re'is map is clearly inaccurate about Cuba (mislabled as Espaniola), omits nearly a 1000 miles of South America's coast and the "land below the ice" map of Antartica doesn't match modern maps. The Nazca plains, which continue to this day to be called landing strips, navigation guides, and even an interstellar encyclopedia - all strikingly low-tech aids for intergalactic voyagers - all have more down-to-earth possibilities that take into account the region's native cultures and technology.

The other mysteries are even more thoroughly demolished. The Pyramids, Easter Island, and the Palenque Astronaut? There's enormous amount of literature on the evolution of Egyptian culture and pyramid building, Heyerdahls' Easter Island study, and examples of other Mayan "astronauts" showing the carvings in their religious and cultural context.

There are several other chapters on von Daniken's other evidence that easily address the lesser known issues.

The book's very slender and easily read. One didn't have to marshall complicated and elaborate explanations to finish von Daniken. In the years since this book has come out, I've seen TV specials that ignore Story's book. It's a shame because Story did not invent his counter-explanations, he simply researched the already existing literature as well as examined what von Daniken was saying.

I'm glad I have this in my personal library. If you're interested in these sort of subjects, I think this is a great buy.

The Space-god Fraud Revealed

In case you haven't noticed, "they" have been pressing on all channels to get you to believe in aliens. von Däniken's ancient astronaut theory was used to create a foundation for that, which they have been building on for decades since then. The truth is, that foundation is full of holes, and Ron Story's book proves it. Erich von Däniken's website boasts; "Erich von Däniken, the world's most successful non-fiction writer of all time, has written 26 books on the topic [of "ancient astronauts"] and has sold over 63 million copies worldwide. His books have been translated into 32 languages." If Ronald Story's message had been as widely publicized as has von Däniken's the forest of trees that were tragically sacrificed in vain to von Däniken's 63 million books may have been saved! But alas, as usual the sensational is glorified, promoted and amplified while the truth is swept under the rug and ignored. Ronald Story's book "The Space-gods Revealed" is the book we all should have read on this topic back in 1976. If we had we would have learned of von Däniken's criminal past as a fraudster and embezzler, as was much more recently reported in this quote from Wikipedia; "Däniken's run-ins with the law started at an early age. In the 1960s, while working in hotels and restaurants across Switzerland, he was convicted of fraud, serving a prison sentence .. Däniken was found guilty of embezzlement, and served more than three years in Swiss prisons. While in prison, he continued writing, and "Return of the Gods" was subsequently published." It takes a particular flair for twisting the facts to one's own ends to commit fraud and embezzlement - even more so to con millions of people into believing claims that have absolutely no basis in fact whatsoever! You've heard the claims about The Wheels of Ezekiel, The Piri Re'is Map, The Nazca Lines, The Stone Heads of Easter Island, The Palenque Astronaut, and all the rest of the so-called "proof" that ancient astronauts visited the earth in the ancient past. Ron Story's book honestly and meticulously examines each artifact in detail, and in context, to show what it really is and what it really means in its own historical and cultural context. Guess what? None of these artifacts even come close to "proving" the ancient astronaut theory. Rather, each has been ripped out of its own historical and cultural context, shamelessly lied about in many details to make it fit, and then presented as "proof" to an unsuspecting public that probably wants to believe this nonsense anyway. How good is Ron Story's book? For a recent radio program I produced and hosted at Tsiyon Radio on the topic of "Space-gods Space Frauds" I found that Ronald Story had already done the lion's share of the research on the topic, and it was all honestly and intelligently presented in "The Space-gods Revealed." That kind of complete, well-presented, well-documented and useful information is definitely worth five stars to me.

"GODS FROM OUTER SPACE"? RONALD STORY THINKS NOT...

Ronald Story is one of the earlier writers who criticized authors such as Erich von Daniken (author of unbelievably popular books such as Chariots of the Gods and Gods from Outer Space: Return to the Stars, or Evidence for the Impossible), who suggest that "ancient astronauts" or "gods from outer space" have visited this planet.

Story begins the book by detailing that, at the time his first book was published, von Daniken was in JAIL on charges of embezzlement, fraud, and forgery. (Von Daniken lightly dismissed this in the preface to his book.)

While Story admits that we do not know for certain the purpose of the Nazca markings in ancient Peru (that von Daniken calls "ancient airfields"), he adds that "It hardly seems reasonable that advanced extraterrestrial spacecraft would require landing strips."

He also quotes von Daniken (from an interview in Playboy magazine) as admitting that his "Chariots of the Gods" book was wrong about the "rustproof iron pillar" in Delhi, saying, "so we can forget about this iron thing."

Concerning the so-called "batteries" from ancient Baghdad, Story writes, "The most likely purpose for such a battery would be in a primitive electroplating process; one-half volt would be a sufficient electric potential to electroplate silver onto copper. I cannot see how these batteries would have been particularly beneficial to ancient space voyagers."

This book (along with Story's book, GUARDIANS OF THE UNIVERSE) is still well worth reading as a critique of the "ancient astronaut" theories.
