About the Author
Judi A. Peman has a B.A. in Spanish Education and an M.A. in Linguistics, both from the University of Illinois. She has taught ESL to both high school students and adults for over 30 years. Currently, she is a teacher emeritus at Truman Community College in Chicago. Judi has presented workshops in basic reading and writing at various professional conferences. She has also taught and trained teachers in both Spain and China. Judi is the author/co-author of 3 ESL text books. Sandra N. Elbaum was an ESL Instructor at Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, for thirty-six years. She has also taught in elementary and high schools, and in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the former Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Sandy is the author of the popular series Grammar in Context, now in its Fifth Edition. Sandy received her B.A. in Spanish and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois.

Solid, Engaging and Affordable

This is the long-standing standby series for grammar courses in our community college ESL program. I have experimented with other texts over the years, but I keep coming back to Elbaum because:
a) Most of the reading and writing contexts are relevant and engaging for my students.
b) Since the series is so widely used, they have many options for obtaining it inexpensively--online second-hand sales, rentals, or hand-me-down from friends and relatives. Since a majority of my students are low-income and textbook costs are an obstacle for them, this is an important consideration.
The weak point of the book, from my perspective, is that some of the grammar points seem to be explained in convoluted and confusing ways when much simpler explanations exist. These include our residual uses of the subjunctive in English, the problem of -ing/-ed participle adjectives, and tricky things about adjective clauses that are governed by features of the embedded sentence. There are several places where I just have to tell the class, "Don't pay attention to that page in the book, I can explain it better."

Totally new book, really like it

Everything as exactly as it says. The seller is also very carefull and patient, besides the inner paper envenlop, alsp put 2 bubble wrapped envelop to protect the book. The book looks wonderful that almost likes new! I'd like to give 5 star.
