About the Author
David Skwire, with degrees from the University of Wisconsin—Madison and Cornell University, taught composition, creative writing, and American literature at Cuyahoga Community College for twenty-five years. He also served on the faculties of Tufts University and Temple University. He acknowledges, however, that his job of most interest to students was a two-year stint as a writer of humorous greeting cards. In addition to his coauthorship of Student’s Book of College English , he is author of the successful Writing with a Thesis . Now retired, Skwire lives near Cleveland.
Harvey S. Wiener taught for many years as professor of English at LaGuardia Community College. He has served in a variety of administrative
positions, most recently as Vice President at Marymount Manhattan College. Dr. Wiener has directed the basic writing program at Pennsylvania State University and has taught at Teachers College, Columbia University, Brooklyn College, Queensborough Community College, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College, Wiener holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature from Fordham University. He was founding president of the Council of Writing Program Administrators and was chair of the Teaching of Writing Division of the Modern Language Association. Wiener is the author of many books on reading and writing for college students and their teachers, including The Writing Room. His book for parents, Any Child Can Write, was a Book-of-the-Month Club alternate. His most challenging writing assignment was a test to quality as Chief Writer for a network soap opera by developing the content for six weeks of episodes. He does not regret having lost the job to someone else.

Buyer Beware

Student's Book of College English, 14th Edition, © 2016, David Skwire & Harvey Wiener, Pearson Education.
I have all 638 pages of this splendid (but heavy) tome in hand, BUT, nota bene, this is NOT a "review"; this is commentary ONLY on an important part of college English: verb tenses.
In keeping with established tradition, I can give it only one-star however good the rest of the material may be. If writers of English grammar texts cannot get something as basic as the six principal verb tenses right, it casts doubt on everything else. Who would argue otherwise?
page 597: "Confusion of the past tense and past participle of irregular verbs is a frequent cause of writing errors" [CORRECT] .
"Remember that the past participle is the correct form after has, have, and had." [WRONG]
"The mountaineers had froze to death, should read: The mountaineers had frozen to death." [WRONG. The mountaineers FROZE to death, is correct]
"The sprinter has just broke another record, should read: The sprinter has just broken another record." [WRONG. The sprinter just BROKE another record]
"EXERCISE; Correct any errors in verb form in the following sentences."
In the absence of an Answer Key, it is not possible to know what the authors consider correct; but based on the items above, it is reasonable to assume that an answer key, if there were one, would mislead.
Ditto for the EXERCISES on the following page, page 598.
page 598. "Most verbs can be expressed in any tense [WRONG, or at least grossly misleading], "and the many different tenses enable the writer to present the fine shades of meaning with great accuracy. [but ONLY if the writer is able to use all the tenses correctly, which these writers apparently cannot.]
Sidebar: William G. Tapply's father, like his son a fine writer, warned his son, according to his son: "Watch out for the verbs". He never forgot that advice; neither should you.
page 599. ALL seven (of seven) 'past perfect' examples are NOT past perfect. They are all in the FORM the past perfect always takes but in themselves, standing alone without context, they are not 'past perfect'. This is a VERY important subtlety to understand. Most students and practitioners don't understand this simple truth.
page 600. "Present perfect tense ... refers to past actions [TRUE] generally of the fairly recent past ..." [FALSE - She has lived in Omaha for 40 years and she still lives in Omaha].
page 601. "The past perfect tense ... is employed for actions previous to the simple past––"more past than past." [Wrong, wrong, WRONG. This crazy notion, widely expressed in the literature, is responsible for much of the difficulty both students and practitioners have in understanding a VERY useful verb tense. "More-past-than-past" is DEMONSTRABLY incorrect and unworkable. Trying to make it work that way gets even seasoned 'authors' into trouble. Rather than being able to execute "fine shades of meaning" (see item above), they continue to make a mess of understanding and communication.
Sorry to go on so long, but it's a big - and important - subject.
