Disappointed

I was disappointed because the piano songs on the CD have instrumental accompaniments, and I found the accompaniments distracting, as I really only wanted to hear what was printed on the page of Alfred's piano book (so I could hear what it is supposed to sound like, of course, when I play it). I am certainly not going to have these accompaniments at home, when I am practicing.

Practical, cuts the sophisticated academics.

This is a very practical book, I teach the course on intercultural negotiations, and believe me this book covers most of the important material in this matter. It cuts the long and boring academic parts that students at the MBA don't like, and goes directly to "hands on the action", the practical and usefull issues.

Not the dream book for this topic, but the best that is avaliable.

Good book on culture difference

in negotiations. I use this book for a college course. Five negotiation styles: Dogder, Dreamer, Haggler, Competitor and Problem Solver, are interesting exercises. Chapter 12 provided the contrast on the negotiation style of Chinese, European, Middle Eastern and Latin American.

Most of the other chapters are not globally related. It is the same theory as other negotiation books.

About the Author
Michele Wong McSween is a mom, fashion designer, author and a fourth generation Chinese American. She resides in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, three sons, and French Bulldog. McSween holds degrees from University of California at Berkeley and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Growing up in Sacramento, CA, she never learned Chinese and wanted to be sure her own boys were confident with Chinese language and culture. After enrolling them in early-learning Mandarin classes, McSween looked for appropriate Mandarin bedtime reading and found that little was available. She created Gordon & Li Li with an appealing, simple and modern design aesthetic that would engage kids and parents alike.

A great introduction to everyday Mandarin

My 2 year-old loves this book! He's been watching Ni Hao, Kai Lan and was really excited to expand his Mandarin vocabulary. He has about 10 words now and is using them interchangeably with English; it's been wonderful to see his functional language expand!

My only complaint is that you really do need to know how to read Pinyin to get anything out of this book, but since Pinyin is really not too difficult, it's worth it if you want to introduce your child to Mandarin.

The pictures are very cute and the words are in English, pinyin, a "sound out" version of pin yin, and the Chinese character, simplified. My sons, aged 3 and 1 love to look through it everyday. I like it so much I plan to give it to friends and family with kids who are interested in learning Mandarin.

I purchased this book to help my son learn Mandarin. It's definitely a great book if you already speak Mandarin and want to teach it to your children. It may be a little difficult if you don't speak Mandarin.
My son enjoys the pictures in it as well.

Adorable!

This book is so creative! The plot has a depth I didn't expect from a short story- I was kept wondering & contemplating until the reveal at the end. The conclusion is endearing & beautifully illustrated (I especially like the dancing cat!). I love the texture & minute detail on every page, & especially the use of watercolor. I've been a fan for years & can't wait to see more! :)

Another great story!

Another great book! What I love about this author is that she makes such likable characters and there is never a moment when I dislike them.

Memphis is funny, sweet, and sassy. Growing up the daughter of biker, she speaks her mind and is no ones doormat.

Downy was a great hero but suprising because I never pictured him the way he was in the book. He was alpha all the way.

Memphis and Downy meet when there is a holdup at her job. Downy is part of the SWAT team and is the one to protect her during the holdup. Memphis is greatful to the guy who saved her life but never saw his face.
As a result of the holdup, Memphis loses her job and has to move to a cheaper apartment. Where her unknown neighbor likes to keep her up all night "entertaining" his guests (if you know what I mean). One night she goes outside to let her dog pee and meets a good looking guy. A guy who she tells all about her loud neighbor and when they are returning to their apartments, you can imagine her surprise when that guy goes into the next door apartment! How she handles seeing him after that is freaking hilarious. But she figures that her neighbor, Downy, is now going to be more considerate about the noise. That isn't the case when once again she can't sleep because of the noises next door. This time though she was going to confront the neighbor about it because she has had enough. The following confrontation had me laughing.

After that, Downy and Memphis are aware of how attracted they are to one another but Downy is reluctant to take it further because of the major age difference. The attraction is overwhelming though and they soon give in to it. And boy was it steamy because Downy likes his control in the bedroom. But when they enter into a relationship, there are problems. Downy is older and set in his ways. It is hard for him to change and Memphis struggles with that. Yet, both are unwilling to give up because both are developing deeper feelings for each other.

This was a great story. It was funny hot, sweet and had that element of danger to keep you reading. I loved the couple and was glad to see them have their HEA.

Looking forward to the next book!

I love love love all of mrs vale's books. They just keep getting better and better. I like how all the stories loop together, how we get to "check in" on the other characters that we loved in the other books. Mrs vale is my new favorite author. You keep writing and I'll keep reading!!

Yippy! I found another great author! I am so happy with this series and this author's writing style that I have already pre-ordered the next two. The background plot is an awesome twist, the main plot of each story is so diverse that the characters are really allowed to shine. Holy hotness, are these men hot! I love the sass and relationship development of the females as they struggle to get used to these alpha men and the danger they put themselves in. As a sister to a former beat cop, a detective, and now warrant officer, I so appreciate the spotlight being shined on the heroes of our country. I am one of those dialysis patients, Mrs. Vale and the struggle that brought you to your writing is appreciated very much. I applaud the courage in your "follow through", because your stories are so worth it. Blessings every day to you and yours.

Tibor Karolyi of Budapest, Hungary, is an International Master, award-winning author and renowned chess trainer. Karolyi coached Peter Leko, a former World Championship challenger, during Leko’s teenage years when in the space of four years Leko improved from promising junior to grandmaster.

I bought the chess book of the yr for under $20

Professional chess reviewers are calling this the book of the year. I agree! Karpov became 1974-1985 world champion, when Fischer walked away from a $5 million match offer. K was an active world champion, who played played in and won a couple dozen super-tournaments & 7/9 world title matches. In their 5 matches(146 games) Kasparov finished with only +2. This immense book features 76 deeply annotated games (notes for some games run 10-15 pages, lots of diagrams, deep analysis). Chapters are by year, starting with K at 11 yrs old, with 18 junior level games before K enters GM level competitions. Most games have introductory comments,(including K's won-loss record vs each opponent). Tournament results are given in the text(I would have liked an appendix listing for results & also for openings-- though there is appendix of strategic themes). Karolyi stays with his task to describe how the greatest positional player developed his game(a few draws and lucky escapes are even included). Karpov's was known for his efficient, positional squeeze and yet he can also aggressively get in the face of opponents. The English prose is reliable, the notes seem to be error-free, (except the odd date mistake). Production values are excellent, the book lays flat when I study the games, has a sturdy binding. For the current price this is a steal!!

This book is a nice complement to other Karpov collections(Mednis,Karpov,Kasparov), with only a few duplicated games. Many famous Karpov wins do not appear in this book. Karolyi selected games based on "instructive and artistic value" & credits other analysts throughout his book. For Karpov's personal history & background stories - read Kasparov & Seirawan. Karolyi is well-known for coaching the Polgars & Leko. I suspect many of these games have been used as student exercises, which explains Karolyi's explanatory writing style. This is a book for long-term studying; as many of Karpov's seemingly simple moves and re-grouping strategies are understandable only under repeated examination.

Great new chess books!

The last really great book to explain Karpov's way of playing was, "How Karpov Wins", by Grandmaster Edmar Mednis, (1975/1994). GM Mednis has passed away but this book lives on as possibly his most educational. Now comes along Two new books on Karpov's Play, "Karpovs Strategic Wins 1 - 1961-1985", 458 p.p. Quality Chess (2011). & "Karpov's Strategic Wins 2 - 1986-2010, 576 (!) p.p. Quality Chess (2011). Like the Mednis book, these two volumes by the very experienced International Master, Tibor Károlyi (Who also wrote two fantastic volumes on Gary Kasparov, and another good book about Judit Polgar, among others), was well worth waiting for - Superbly indexed, with detailed indexes, and many statistics (Including how Karpov's opponent's did against other world champions), is included in the two volumes. Of course the most important thing is how well the games are annotated & explained - Here again I was thrilled to see a fine blend of deep analysis (where necessary), and verbal explanation that rival's Mednis' earlier work. If you are a chess player with an understanding of the game between experienced beginner, and advanced amateur, and you desire to become a master-level player, then you cannot make a better choice then these two volumes - And even if you don't progress much in your chess ability from reading them, you will come away with hundreds of hours of enjoyment and learning about the play of one of the 3 greatest World Champions since 1972.

Destined to Become a Classic

Anatoly Karpov's games are legendary among chess enthusiasts. Some GM's have even acknowledged that their path to the GM title involved a long and intensive study of Karpov's play. Were it not for one Garry Kasparov, Karpov would have likely held the title of World Champion for 20 years, so strong was his play for so long. This 2 volume work may well be the best extant work on Karpov's games, with competition only from Karpov's own "My Best Games", which includes 100 games. This volume alone has 76 Karpov games, and several dozen other games as a bonus. This work, as the title implies, focuses only on Karpov's strategic wins. While Anatoly could play great attacking games on occasion, his real claim to fame is as a strategic genius, and it is his strategic play that gets center attention here. Karpov was known for his ability to slowly and surely squeeze his opponent like a python, often placing most of his pieces on his own first rank, where their influence still strangled the opponent's postion. The notes to the games show that this work is a real labor of love. Karolyi gives clear, well thought out explanations of the play. Analysis of variations is in plenty of depth, but the real shining feature is the rich, plentiful explanations in WORDS of what is going on. There is a tremendously rich education in positional/strategic play to be found here. Here is just one of hundreds of such notes, taken from Karpov-Unzicker, 1974 Olympiad: (after 35.Bh5!) "Completing the manoeurvre. In this particular case the side w/ extra space is happy to exchage a pair of pieces, considering that we are talking about Black's best defensive piece. The text move illustrates another important principle: in positions w/ a space advantage , one of the most effective strategies is to attack on both flanks. The defending side may be able to protect one weakness, but the difficulties associated w/ transferring defensive pieces from one side to the other will often prove insurmountable." It is not often that I have seen so much distilled chess wisdom in a games collection. Wojtyla and John of the Cross... scholastics?

Oh, what a provocative title to my review! Alas, I will explain the title below. But for now, the current book under review is Karol Wojtyla's doctoral dissertation from 1948 at the Angelicum under the direction of Father Garrigou-Lagrange. Wojtyla studies the concept of faith is found in the writings of St John of the Cross; that is, in The Ascent of Mount Carmel, Dark Night of the Soul, Spiritual Canticle, and The Living Flame of Love. Hence, as Wojtyla admits on page 237, faith in this dissertation is studied from the point of view of "mystical theology" as opposed fundamental, dogmatic, or moral theology. This point of view is extremely brilliant and at the same time profoundly simple. I will discuss Wojtyla's main thesis below as well as the relationship to scholasticism.

What is, from the mystical point of view, faith? Before we can begin to answer this question, early on page 18, notes that :the study of Scholastic theology provided the foundation" for John of the Cross' writings. Wojtyla goes on to discuss how such a scholastic metaphysics is simply presupposed to understand John of the Cross, and that there is no conflict between John of the Cross and Aquinas. On the contrary, there is conformity of doctrine. Such a claim seems shocking to people, yet the detailed harmonization of the teaching of the interior life as found in Aquinas and John of the Cross was the subject of Wojtyla's advisor's book "Christian Perfection and Contemplation." These are only a few brief points, but suffice it to say that claims like "there is no room for the mystical in Aquinas" or "Wojtyla departed from the Scholastics" is entirely unfounded. As we will see, we cannot even answer our question about faith from the mystical point of view without presupposing Scholastic metaphysics. It is also worth noting that Wojtyla gives a hint that what will turn out to be his Christian Phenomenology will be Scholastic theology from a "personal experience" point of view. On page 23 he writes "[the doctrine] is expressed in scholastico-mystical language, using words and concepts well known in Scholastic theology, but its primary value and significance is a witness of personal experience." Those who would separate Wojtyla and Thomas take note.

Now to the main question. By its very nature, man's intellect cannot grasp the divine. That is, the essence of man's intellect does not have the potency in-and-of-itself to apprehend God. Faith, then, is a means to an end. Faith is the means by which the intellect rises to union with God. This is repeated several times in the book, starting on page 33. On page 42, Wojtyla writes "... the virtue of faith is acknowledged as the way to union [with God]. It is the proportionate means of union, and therefore possesses an essential likeness to God. This means that the essence of faith and divinity somehow relate to another and converge." Wojtyla goes on to say that no created thing can serve as this means, and hence, faith must be "something similar to divinity." More generally, all the theological virtues relate man to God by uniting their respective faculties (faith to intellect, hope to memory, charity to will) to God. But faith surpasses understanding, as opposed to method of the intellect. Thus begins a discussion of how on the one hand faith sheds light on God, yet it is still in darkness since "the divinity as known by the intellect through faith is not clearly manifested but hidden in teh intentional order of knowledge." (p 67) The nest several pages go on to discuss that faith has teh paradoxical property of being both "light and darkness." The darkness by which the mind enlightened by faith sees God is especially frustrating for the intellect since the very nature of the intellect is to grasp or understand the form of what it has been presented. But even with faith, man cannot totally grasp the form of God through his intellect, so that the intellect which is enlightened by faith never comes to rest, and is always contemplating. This is simply beautiful stuff! As Wojtyla writes "The 'dark habit' of faith is opposed to knowledge not because of a lack of demonstration but a lack of form." (p 210) If this isn't thinking deeply grounded in Scholasticism, I don't know what is!

In summary, man does not have the natural capacity for union with God. Faith is the means by which the intellect rises to union with God, the ends. Faith is a means to an ends which presents God the intellect in an intelligible way, yet one in which the intellect cannot fully grasp the form. I found this book so insightful, so profound. The reading of this text has shed for me new light on some of the writings of JPII, as being aware of his scholastic background makes his future writings more intelligible. This is an important work, one that will also dispose the reader to more easily understand John of the Cross as well. In short, all should read the formative intellectual work of one the most influential popes of the 20th century.

About the Author
Chan S. Park is currently a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, respectively. Over his 25-year academic career, he has been actively involved in a variety of areas of research, teaching, and professional consulting. His work has been recognized internationally in the fields of engineering economics, strategic and economic decisions within service sectors, financial engineering (real options valuation), risk analysis, and capital budgeting. He also authored or coauthored leading textbooks on the related subjects, including Contemporary Engineering Economics (Prentice Hall), and Advanced Engineering Economics (John Wiley & Sons). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal The Engineering Economist and is a licensed Professional Engineer.

This text is -okay-

I think this book is alright. Honestly, it has a lot of text for how little content it actually covers. The international edition is identical to the hardcover 3rd edition, so buy it if you can just to save some money. The only things worth knowing out of this book are the tables in Chapters 2-4 (equation tables) and Chapter 6, buy vs. lease.
