About the Author
Joseph Campana lived in Mumbai from 2007 to 2011. He taught feature writing and literary journalism at the Xavier Institute of Communications and literature at the American School of Bombay. His writing has appeared in the Indian Express and Time Out Mumbai. He currently lives in Missoula, Montana, with his wife, Jillian, and daughter, Estelle.

Fascinating Read About a Little Known Piece of India

Dharavi is an area within the Indian city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Some people call it a slum and others a place filled with opportunity. Editor Joseph Campana has assembled a group of Indian and foreign writers who work to describe this place. Campana opens with an introduction that pulled me into his book. His descriptions and capsule summaries of Dharavi prepared me for what followed. He divided the book into four parts: Arrival, Work and Money, The Daily Grind and Timepass, and Fixing Dharavi. Each part begins with a short description by Campana – these helped to give the work cohesion and flow.

While the boundaries of the four parts are not firm, they gave me a feel for Dharavi that I otherwise would have missed. The first section, Arrival, both brings the reader into Dharavi and begins to paint a picture of some of the half million plus who have come to live and work in this two square kilometers of former marshland.

The second part, Work and Money, tells us about some of the economy of the area – both a bit of the dark side and of the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives despite a shortage of such basics as water and electricity. We are reminded that we could well be wearing something such as a belt buckle cast and polished in Dharavi.

The third part, The Daily Grind and Timepass, added a new word to my vocabulary: “timepass”. It shows the reader another facet of this rough diamond and leads us to the fourth part. The fourth section, Fixing Dharavi, is a final gem. What makes it so interesting is how Campana and his stable of writers tell us about the possible futures of the land. The property where Dharavi stands has gone from being worthless to some of the most valuable real estate in Mumbai. Developers salivate over the possibilities and we learn of what may come – both good and bad.

In sum, I can highly recommend this book. Armchair travelers will love it for the picture it paints of an exotic place. Students of other places and cultures will likely treasure this book for the comprehensive portrait of a complex place in a country that is both a cradle of humanity and a hope for the world’s future. It is exactly the kind of book that can be just the right assigned reading in an anthropology, sociology or psychology course. Just plain readers like me will enjoy it for the fascinating story it weaves. Usually I try to ration my books as I live at the end of a costly supply chain but, I couldn’t do so in this instance – it was just too entertaining and interesting a read to put down!

I bought this book through Amazon. I hope they get more copies as I'd wanted to give one as a gift.

Flawed History

This book is fun to read, but on a closer reading I find it unacceptably flawed. The authors rely heavily on first-hand anecdotes, and whilst this can make for lively reading, it is not good history if no trouble has been taken to make sure that an anecdote is anything more than a platform for the storyteller to become the star of his own show.
As an example, we get about a third of a page relating to an incident about boots, over which a man has been harboring a grievance for some fifty years. In the process of telling his story, he maligns his company commander. But the officer is never given a chance to tell another side of the story. This same man later accuses the same officer of hysteria and cowardice, but once again, the officer is given no voice in the matter. The fact that the officer in question (Major Robert Kennard) was mentioned in dispatches and won the Military Cross would suggest that he was a rather better man than his loquacious accuser suggests. In the hands of a better historian and a more able and conscientious editor, stories like this would have been weeded out, which would have made for a better and more reliable book. A historian should insist on nothing less than the fullest, and most comprehensive, balanced research. This book falls sadly short of those ideals.

A tale of courage and sacrifice

A well written narrative about the British troops fighting overwhelming Japanese forces as they withdraw into Singapore. Extraordinarily detailed and strong in the oral tradition of history. Plain to see that years of research and documentation gives the real truth of what happened on the front lines as the British Empire collapsed in Malaya. Authors also give vivid accounts of the prisoners used as slaves by the Japanese on the infamous "Death Railway." One can readily see the day by day account as these gallant men fought and died... and then were abandoned and falsely maligned by their country's leaders.

Steve Hindy is the author of Beer School and co-founder, chairman and president of Brooklyn Brewery, one of America's top 20 breweries. A former journalist, he became interested in homebrewing while serving as a Beirut-based Middle East Correspondent for the Associated Press. He and Brooklyn Brewery have been featured in The New York Times, the New York Post, Crain's New York Business, New York magazine, CNN, The Huffington Post, and countless beer blogs and specialty publications. Hindy is a member of the Board of Directors of the Beer Institute and the Brewers Association. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Despite the politics, this is a Excellent book

If i had to sum it up, about 75-85% of this book is fantastic. It shows a lot of the drama and issues that came up as the craft beer industry evolved from a impossible dream into a real, honest-to-god- industry (as opposed to just a simple nitch market), and it all comes from the view of one of the craft beer industries most central figures, the co-founder of the Brooklyn brewing company.

Of course, that last part is this books greatest weakness: the authors point of view. Even though he portrays events fairly evenly, its not a truly objective history of craft beer, as the author gets up on his soap box quite a few times (especially at the end), and most of it is railed at the Boston Brewing Company and Jim Koch (in particular). This was not as bad as I thought it was going to be however...... In fact, in most of the book he paints Jim as a rather misunderstood person (ex, showing that all evidence points to the fact that his companies medals where won fair and square, his dedication to the industry and passion for his business, and his regrets of alienating many of the smaller brewers in the industry). In short the book seems to show that a lot of the flack that Jim has gotten in the past is not earned, but seems to portray a negative view of the company's future (ex, saying that he feels that Jim wants to own the craft beer revolution and his need to have an enemy with big beer).

Its a bias, and to read the book properly you ahve to know that its their so you can think about his opinions as he goes along and come up with your own.........but does this make the boo ka bad buy?

not at all. its a highly recommended book that I feel needs to be in any brewers or beer lovers library. Its especially useful if you ever have to talk craft beer history in a bar and want something that gets the record straight.

it also works as a GREAT companion to Ambitious brew, and reading one after the other is highly recommended.

If the book wasn't so opinionated, I would had given it 5 stars.

An interesting view from the trenches of the Craft Beer Revolution.

Pre-prohibition over 1200 breweries served the American consumer a wide variety of beer. By 1965 that number dwindled to less than 50 breweries serving the least common denominator. Today, as a result of the craft beer revolution, over 3,000 breweries now serve the American beer drinking public. Just about every American now lives within 10 miles of a brewery. Ex-journalist Steve Hindy learned how to home brew as a correspondent for the Associated Press in Beirut. Bitten by the beer bug, he returned to Brooklyn to co-found Brooklyn Brewing. He provides an insider’s view of the craft beer revolution from its inception with Fritz Maytag’s purchase and reincarnation of Anchor Brewing in 1965 to the present. Hindy entertainingly describes the key personalities and the important social, economic, and political trends and forces that contributed to the rise of craft beer. He writes well. Hindy brings large themes to life by highlighting specific breweries and personalities and how they reacted to these themes. His personal experiences highlight the struggles between craft beer brewers and beer distributors and the brewing giants. His opinions and feel for the politics flavor the book throughout but make it more compelling. This is not an objective compilation of craft brewers or even the best of craft brewing and for those wanting a bird’s eye view, look elsewhere. Written from deep in the trenches, Hindy’s book will engage both the beer geek and those interested in the growth of businesses. A very entertaining and well written book.

Well Written. Entertaining. Informative.

The story has been told enough times by enough authors at this point that I respect Hindy for inserting more of his own personal views and telling the readers something we haven't already heard. Some may not like the political aspects of the book, but its a key part of the story and probably one of the most important things for today's beer consumers and craft beer enthusiasts to know.

About the Author
Anthony “Prem” Carlisi was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1955. He began his Ashtanga journey at the young age of 23, in 1978, when Guruji was teaching in Encinitas, California for 6 months. The following year marked his initial trip to Mysore, India where he studied Advanced A; currently known as third and fourth series. Prem was in the first group of western students to show up on Guruji’s doorstep in Mysore. He is considered one of the oldest practitioners of the method, along with the likes of David Williams, Norman Allen, David Swenson, Nancy Gilgoff and Tim Miller. In the past thirty years, Prem has spent four of them studying and traveling all over India. In February of 2005, Prem was officially Certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, as a senior Ashtanga Teacher. This title enables him to teach the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A series and the Pranayama sequence of Ashtanga yoga. (Certification is different from Authorization; Authorized teachers are only allowed to teach the Primary series). As a certified teacher, Prem has the ability to communicate and pass on all aspects of the Ashtanga method to the next generation of yogis, with Guruji’s blessing. In addition to Prem’s studies of Ashtanga yoga, he has also done in depth Ayurvedic study with the reknowned Ayurvedic practitioner, Dr. Vasant Lad. In 1983, he initiated a 3 year course with Dr. Lad and was certified to do consultations and clinical work. Prem has also done courses with Dr. David Frawley and Dr. Robert Svoboda. He uses the Ayurvedic principles in his own life, through diet, practice and lifestyle choices.. Prem’s interest in Tantra began in the mid-eighties, but it wasn’t until several years later that he began to study it further. He feels that Tantra is the next natural progressive step to those exploring the vedic traditions and feels it completes the synergy of the Ashtanga, Ayurveda and Tantra systems. Prem continues his own independent studies, experimentation and ongoing exploration of these three sciences.

Enjoyable and humorous read, even for people new to yoga!

As a beginner to yoga, a friend suggested this book to me. I was reluctant to read it at first, but once I started, I couldn't put it down! Since then, it has turned me on to a lot of new ideas and I am excited to learn more about all three topics.

Refreshing new look at Yoga, Ayurveda and Tantra

The Only Way Out Is In, is a refreshing new look at yoga, ayurveda and tantra. It is not a typical dull yoga book. The author shares his own personal insights into the practice and keeps it available for anybody to read and understand. It is an easy read, yet has alot of depth. His life story is also very revealing and intriguing, he's not afraid to share with his readers the challenges he has encountered on and off the mat.

A Great Summer Read

Every summer comes the wave of summer books, the ones that promise funny, light reads with their pretty covers, and with Jan Blazanin's newest book A & L Do Summer the reader receives that and much, much more to say the least.

Aspen, one city girl stuck in the country, and Laurel, a longtime country girl, have always been the girls to fall under the radar in their small country town, but this summer will change everything for the better. To begin this, Aspen has a great first plan involving one prank, pigs, and the principal's office. Unfortunately, their prank idea ends up in the wrong hands and involves one late night clean up that starts their summer off to a less than satisfactory start. However, this does not get them down; instead, they plan to try harder. From summer jobs involving interesting drive thru service, to walking skunks in strollers, to parties and boys, this summer will surely be unforgettable. Though, will it land Aspen and Laurel on the radar once and for all, or will it leave them even farther down on the social ladder? Only time and more pages will tell in this funny and easy read.

Adorable and funny, Aspen and Laurel were two main characters that I could not help but adore. Their antics involving being noticed were hilarious; their friendship was three-dimensional and relatable to every girl or boy who has a crazy best friend; and best of all, their personalities jumped off the page and came to life. The secondary characters also added a great deal of fun to this light read such as Clay, Laurel's love interest, Manny, Laurel's brother who Aspen cannot help but love from afar, and Miss Simmons, the typical crazy old skunk lady.

While the plot of this was too complicated or original, it was easy to fall into, because of the different events that occurred as well as the spark the characters brought. I enjoyed seeing Aspen and Laurel's everyday lives depicted on page, and I especially loved seeing all the trouble they got themselves into. Several scenes had me laughing aloud, which always makes me love a book even more.

Finally, Jan Blazanin's writing has definitely improved in this one. From the story building to the character and plot development, everything was right on key, and this has made me even more eager to read more by her.

Full of spunk and sparks, A & L Do Summer will have you giggling to yourself as these country girls make a name for themselves.

Seizing the summer by hook or by crook

Prepare yourself for the ultimate summer à la Aspen and Laurel because they certainly have quite a full plate of backfired plans going on! A & L do summer was not what I had expected from the synopsis. I thought there would be a little more city-vs-country girl dynamics going on - and perhaps a little fun scheming as finding boyfriends go. Instead Aspen and Laurel had more Lucy/Ethel hilarities - which I thoroughly enjoyed!

A & L do summer is a wholesome slice of warm apple crumble topped with a refreshing scoop of vanilla ice cream. Doesn't that sound trouble - a delightful sort of trouble? These girls get into the strangest of predicaments - as they hop out of the pig-herding fiasco, they fall right into drive-thru shenanigans and a daring chicken rescue operation! I admit, it sounds like too unbelievable to happen to these girls - but they pull it off with such charm that you cannot help but believe that they are invincible!

If you need a break from the heavy-duty YA reads and just want a good chuckle to brighten your day, I think you can do no wrong with A & L do summer ! Definitely a win for fans of I LOVE LUCY!

Jan Blazanin's A and L Do Summer was a fitting read for the first days of my summer break - a fun, quick read focusing on best friends Laurel and Aspen's summer before their senior year. The two girls are on a mission to get noticed in their rural Iowa town. They get attention all right, just not necessarily the type they were seeking.

Both girls find themselves in and out of trouble, putting a damper on some of their summer plans. Yet, the two persevere, trying to find ways to avoid a trio of newly graduated senior boys who are constantly threatening them, while also seeking summer romances and to try to have some fun in the midst of all the consequences for mistakes and misunderstandings.

The book had the perfect blend of adventure, friendship, and romance. I would love to read more about what happens with Apsen and Laurel during their senior year of high school as I am sure their adventures will continue.
