Water repellant quick reference
By totallyfrozen
Texas is hot. Southeast Texas is also humid there are a godzillian different bugs here and plenty of spiders to eat them. I was glad to find a quick reference. To be so compact, it uses symbols for some info but the small introduction section explains them. 2 species listed are identified with the common name of "spider" (but the scientific name is also included for all spiders in this chart). Also, all the spiders are given a typical size range which seems pretty generic. For example, several of them are listed as having a body size of 0.25" - 0.5". So detailed sizes of specific species are not shown. The common size ranges are. Imagine my surprise when I saw this male wolf spider on my screen and thought it looked huge only to discover (according this chart) that it was likely a juvenile since it had a BODY size of 0.5" and this chart lists their body size as 0.5" - 1.0"! So if this wolf spider spans 3 inches with a half inch body, then an adult with a 1 inch body would span nearly 6 inches?! Wow!!
By the way, I was walking in grass near an air conditioner at the side of a house in Porter, TX once and I was foolish enough to wear flip flops at the time. I was bitten on the foot by a giant wolf spider and the puncture marks were nearly a half inch apart. At first, we'd thought I'd been bitten by a snake. At the time of the bite it really hurt a lot and I jumped and yelled; however, the only treatment needed was to out an ice pack on the bite. I never got sick and the bite healed within a few days which us how we figured it was not a snack bite. A snake that leaves fang marks is a viper and the venom would have certainly made me dangerously ill. The bite of these giant wolf spiders hurts because their fangs are large; otherwise, it's harmless. Still, I wear my old Army boots when traipsing around the back yard now. It seems most likely my bite was from a giant wild spider. According to this chart, they can reach a size that would leave a large bite mark.
I've found this chart very helpful around the yard and garden for identifying spiders and figuring out whether it was one that needed to be killed or be left. So far, I've only found one genuine, legit brown recluse indoors at work. That one had to die because their venom is dangerous and it was in a work area. It's nice to be able to calm the nerves of friends and family by showing them that a "creepy" spider they see is harmless to humans.
Good quality chart. Laminated for water repellency. Color photos. Easy to read, logical, informative layout.

this is a great guide, even for Arachnophob's like us
By Chad B.
Stellar! Hands down, this is a great guide, even for Arachnophob's like us! We were able to identify the 3 spiders we saw on a family trip, and it's great to know none were poisonous! Photo guide with habitat, size, web, etc. Really good for the kids, although it took my daughter several attempts before she would even look at it, after a few days it was amongst our guides (Wildlife, snakes, birds, etc) and is now a ready resource. I highly recommend!!!!
