Review
“I think the authors [Hearn/Baker] presented the materials in one of the best ways. They are very clear so that the students can understand…especially, adding the OpenGL example codes help the students a lot.” — Jong Kwan Lee, Bowling Green University

“A strong suit of this book [Hearn/Baker] is its sound integration of graphics foundations, algorithms, technology, libraries, and programming. The book provides a good overview of the key areas of graphics that a university student would want to know in a first course and beyond. The text can be a valuable reference after the course as it provides “room to grow.” — Timothy Newman, University of Alabama — Huntsville

“The features stressed should be the good explanation of concepts with sound mathematical concepts, great illustrations to explain each concept and the code snippets that actually show an implementation of the OpenGL function being explained.” — Amar Raheja, California State Polytechnic University

“The clarity of presentation, completeness of concept delivery and illustration, the book versatility and usability as professional reference and course textbook are a few of the features that differentiates this text from others.” — Iren Valova, University of Massachusetts — Dartmouth

“I think it [Hearn/Baker] has excellent coverage of material, discusses concepts at a reachable level, and doesn’t muddle the learning with lofty messages, concepts, or complexity.” — Dana Wortman, University of Colorado — Colorado Springs

Same as third edition and cheap paper
By Francisco R. O.

Revision of my update: 1/9/2013
While I keep the 3 stars I have posted, I will like to add more details about the book.
This is comparing this book with the previous version.
A) The book is much better organized than before.
B) The new chapters are not worth the purchase.
C) It does have more exercises.
D) It still uses GL_QUADS .... Really? Are you serious?
Overall, I believe that the publisher and the authors rush this edition so it could be used in the class room. It is an expensive book. Another aspect that I heard from some people taking a CG course, is that they cannot buy an E-BOOK. While I prefer the "REAL" book, there are younger people preferring E-BOOKS.

I think if the book, could be updated to reflect Programmable Pipeline (and not one chapter devoted to it as they have it now) and more up to date information, it will have more potential.

Also, for the price they request, they could make the book in color. It only has a few pages in the back in color. The rest is AMBER... Green and Black ...

I have to say, that Interactive Computer Graphics is a good course text book and more up to date. The one book that I think is perfect for a modern introductory computer graphics course is Foundations of 3D Computer Graphics by
Steven J. Gortler. This is the most beautiful book I have seen in the topic, except for the BIBLE (Foley) and maybe WATT. But for introductory course, go with Gortler!

REMAINS 3 STARS

*****
I revised both books and check some entire chapters. The chapter are identical. I have the following problem with the new edition

1) Cheap Paper (terrible paper)
2) The new material is so small that is not worth buying the book
3) They still use the old opengl ... They claim is easier to learn, which they have a point, but get with the times. that's a lazy approach.

If you can't find the third edition, then buy it. otherwise, get the third edition.

Look elsewhere or buy the previous edition!
By Dove
This book was put together very poorly. They jump between concepts and do not present the material in a very concise manner. I found a few online tutorials to OpenGL much more helpful than this book. My professor required the 4th edition of the book but many of my classmates purchased the 3rd edition. After reviewing both I did not see many differences. If you need this book for a class, purchase the 3rd edition but be prepared to do most of your learning from external sources!!

Heavy on theory, short on openGL
By Jeffrey K. Smith
If you want a sophisticated book on principles of computer graphics, this book might work. If you want to learn openGL, this is not the book to get. I found this book difficult to read, perhaps because I'm not all that interested in theory. The book contains only enough information about openGL for them to use it in their examples. It does not contain everything that you would need to know about openGL to write your own programs.
